Adobe release Photoshop CS2 as a free download!
It’s not a scam or some kind of trick, but this leading photo editing package that once cost over £500 is now available for FREE direct from Adobe!
I just grabbed this from the Adobe blog:
Effective December 13, Adobe disabled the activation server for CS2 products and Acrobat 7 because of a technical glitch. These products were released over 7 years ago and do not run on many modern operating systems. But to ensure that any customers activating those old versions can continue to use their software, we issued a serial number directly to those customers. While this might be interpreted as Adobe giving away software for free, we did it to help our customers.
They say it was done to “help our customers”, and that’s great! especially as those customers spent a small fortune back in 2005 to get their hands on this package, and many of them will have religiously upgraded year on year to keep up with the latest bells and whistles on offer from the big guns of the photo editing industry.
So now, just 7 years later they have the latest offering with Adobe Photoshop CS6 and have made CS2 free for anyone. No catch, no limit, not even a sign up to the news letter, or registration is required – it’s completely FREE.
Could there be a deeper motive to the free photoshop giveaway?
Well, with all the free and open source photo editing suits now available, and not to mention the millions in revenue lost to piracy, ( well, IMHO, I don’t personally look at piracy of expensive programs as having a real effect on companies like adobe as the majority of people who will download the dodgy copies only do so because of the huge cost in purchasing the original and they wouldn’t otherwise purchase it as it’s only a bit of a hobby for them, so although some say that Adobe are loosing $millions to people getting free copies, I say they are not, as those ( most) would’nt dream of paying $100’s anyway! I don’t in any way support piracy, and I do know that many people will run illegitimate programs when they can well afford it, especially in business, but the vast majority will be home users tweaking photos of their kids n stuff! – rant over 🙂 ) er, where was I…. ahhh yes the deeper motive, well, they could be aiming to get 10,000’s of free copies out there in the hope of getting people into the Adobe club, a bit like Apple, once tasted, never to return to the lesser flavours.
Lets be honest, the program is a few years old, it’s a digital download and will not cost Adobe anything to give it away other than a few GB of server space and a bit more traffic, it’s not like you can go buy the program off the shelf any more. So there is no loss in revenue. Though one thing you/Adobe can get is to know each other and maybe you’ll like the free sample so much that you’ll be back to adobe with your card details at the ready to part with your hard earned cash for the latest Adobe Photoshop CS6.
