Jim, if a couple is going to spend thousands on a wedding, they are probably going to hire a pro and not be interested in this guide. If however they are on a tight budget of say a few hundred, then the photographer will be one thing that they can, and do, do without completely.
The aim of the guide is to help those that would probably not hire a pro to get good wedding photos. It's also a handy guide for those who are keen to do wedding photos maybe as a favour or just to help out.
But, yes (95% of the time) a pro is the best choice. No harm in a few extra shots from the guests though, especially if they have a bit of help and a few good pointers.

... of course you could more likely end up with a lot of mediocre shots that you are totally disappointed with and the big day has gone forever.

The only thing left after the event to remind you of the most important day of your lives are your Wedding photos.

Having spent probably thousands on a dress, venue, flowers and feeding your guests isn't it a bit foolish to trust recording the event to someone who most likely has no experience and no backup equipment? They are also probably a good friend who would like to enjoy the day too. Yet you put them under this pressure to deliver and if they don't you probably ruin a good friendship.

Hi Geoff
Great compo. If you turn the whole shot through 90 degrees it looks like a totem pole or if you take drugs, which I don't, a veggie big dipper.
best wishes
