Thoughts on Child Portrait Photography

Child portraits can brighten up a house and remind your children how cute they used to be as they grow up. However, getting a child to sit still long enough to have a picture taken can be a challenge!
It`s a good idea to use a portrait photographer who is used to working with kids because then you`ll be guaranteed good results, it`s also important to stay close at hand so your child feels safe and comfortable. Taking along favourite toys and talking about how fun a photo shoot will be beforehand will improve the chances of your child behaving, you could also offer a reward for good behaviour.

If you can`t find a photographer who takes good family photos then why not try portrait photography yourself? You create a professional looking shot with a digital camera at home. All you need is the right lighting, composition and angle.

Our 5 Top Tips

1. Make them laugh

Have someone stand beside you and make faces at them! Laughter makes for great pictures. If you pretend you aren`t aware that your friend is making faces and keep trying to catch them in the act (and fail) it could be even funnier for the child. You should take plenty of shots so a few of your child smiling naturally or even giggling hysterically should be good photographs.

2. Take your time

Don`t go in there thinking you`ll get the greatest photo right away; it`s all about taking an array of images and then choosing some of the best. If you`ve made a lighting set up or put up a back drop such as a coloured throw, let your kid get used to where they`re sat and have a chat with them first so they settle in.

3. Choose your environment carefully

Professional portraits usually look great because they have subdued backgrounds and position the subject nicely. If you want your child to look active and happy why not go to the beach or park? As long as you consider lighting, background and frame shots off-centre they should look great.

4. Keep them happy

Finishing the photo shoot on a high note is important because it means children will have fond memories and be happy to participate again. In order to help associate the photo shoot with fun you could help them to take a photograph at the end. Other rewards could be their favourite sweets or ice cream or even just a hug and some praise.

5. Choose your camera wisely

You won`t need a tripod to photograph kids but you will need a camera with a built-in `stabiliser` to keep images crisp. For close-ups of a child`s face a good zoom is invaluable. If you got too close in person your camera might get snatched and you could have a tug of war on your hands. If you`re wondering what digital cameras are best for photographing kids any are fine; zoom and clarity are most important.
